  • Naomi's Notes: "Be Proud of your Accomplishments"
    by: Naomi Hulme

We have all heard about making new year's resolutions now that the new year is here. This is a good thing because it makes us look at maybe what we didn't get done in the previous year that still needs to be done. Even though we will always have a long list that we are working on, there will be a carry over from one year to the next for certain things.

The main thing to remember is that we did accomplish a whole lot with that long list that we had last year. Be proud of those accomplishments, whether they were big or small. At least you are moving forward. It always feels good to be able to cross so many things off the list each day. If we kept our crossed-off lists and could see them at the end of the year, it would be amazing to see what we completed.

Just imagine what the previous year would have been like if you had done nothing-you would be way behind, if you were still in business.

Plan ahead for making progress and check off those items that you have taken care of. Get an "easy" button from Staples that speaks to you and says "That was easy." Don't look at your list as a mountain. Look at it as small accomplishments and be proud!

Safety & Security: Before , During and After a Show

Being at a bridal show is an exciting time for everyone involved. However, it is important to remember some key safety tips for before the show (set-up), during the show, and after the show (take-down).

We hope the following Tips will help you enjoy a smooth and safe show!

    1. Careful Lifting. When you are in a hurry it is easy to get ahead of yourself and carry more than you can handle to your booth. Put to use all of the things you've ever heard about lifting with your legs, not your back. Keep your back straight and bend at the knee. The last thing you want to do the weekend of a show is throw out your back! It is also a good idea to bring your own dolly to carry the load. Just make sure your company name is on the dolly so that it is not taken by mistake.
    2. Have a tool kit and First Aid kit handy. Although we will have the essential items at the show office along with an on-site paramedic during the show hours, there is nothing like having what you need at arm's reach.
    3. Station someone at your booth and car at all times. The best way to protect your possessions is to assign one person to stay at the booth, and one person to stay at the car during set-up and take down, then another person going back and forth between the two.
    4. Be careful about hanging heavy items on the pipe and drape. All the booths are connected, so if a heavy object causes one pipe to fall, imagine the domino effect that takes place over all the booths (one of the many reasons it is great to have your business insurance).
    5. Make sure all children are supervised at all times. The Bridal Show can be a dangerous place for small children, especially during set-up and take down. It is best to not have children at the show, but if you must have them there, please keep your little ones close to prevent any accidents.
    6. Wear safe, well fitted shoes during set-up and take down. Bring the extra pair of shoes to change into--your feet will be happy and you are less likely to sprain an ankle this way, too.

    Wedding Professionals Business Conference

Planning is already underway for the upcoming conference on November 19, 2008!

Take some time to read the following testimonial from one of the exhibitors regarding last year's event.

I really enjoyed the conference because it was a chance for the vendors who are normally busy with brides at the Bridal Shows to talk with each other and get ideas and helpful tips on how to market their services. Referrals are a great way to get new business, but if you don't have a chance to meet other vendors outside of your specialty, how will you know which businesses are the best to refer to your own clients? I met some wonderful people, learned a lot from the seminars and won a fabulous door prize!

The roundtables were very helpful in getting ideas from our peers and experts on the subjects. Detective Jeff Taylor was full of information on Identity Theft and even brought me some extra information the second day! Just the one seminar on Free Publicity by Jeff Crilley would have been worth the money to get in. He gave all of us some wonderful ideas and treated each person he met as if they were the only person in the room.

Your staff was absolutely wonderful! They were very accommodating and always smiling. They carried on the show with professionalism and enthusiasm. I'm really glad PicFlips was able to be a part of your show this year. We were very pleased.

Save me a seat - I'll be there next year!

    ~Amy Kelly, PicFlips, LLC

Constant Contact: Protection from Spam Reports

For the past three years we have used Constant Contact, an email marketing service, as our main source for creating mass email campaigns. Through Constant Contact we are able to send monthly newsletters (such as this one), exhibitor reminders, Bridal Shows, Inc. news and updates on events, as well as coupons to upcoming shows to registered brides. We have tried to take full advantage of this efficient way to communicate sending out over 100,000 emails in the past three years.

Because of our success with Constant Contact, we regularly recommend it to our customers, and realize that many of you have adopted this user-friendly marketing technique as well. We are constantly learning new things, and this article is to help those of you that also use Constant Contact as well as those considering it as an email option.

Junk email and spam mail are a part of all of our daily lives. Many of us spend time every day weeding through the unwanted emails, filing in the junk folder, and sending spam reports. Unfortunately this can cause a dilemma for those of us in the wedding industry. Many of us send emails out to brides that have a specific use for our services. However, after the wedding, the bride may begin to view wedding related emails as junk and issue a spam report. When too many spam reports are posted on an email, your Constant Contact account, or possibly even your web server could be in jeopardy.

Constant Contact allows 1 spam report per 1,000 emails, but what happens when the spam reports are too high? Should 500 brides miss out on an email because 10 choose to issue a spam report?

Speaking from experience, this can be a very frustrating situation. It is difficult to prevent someone from treating your email as "spam" even if they signed up to receive information in the beginning, but there are several things you can do to help prevent the reports on your account:

    • Watch the wedding dates: Keep track of the wedding dates on your list. It would be a good idea to develop separate mailing lists for different time frames such as: "Sept-Oct 08 Weddings" and so forth. Once the wedding date has passed, send out a specific email asking the bride if she would still like to receive information for future events or engaged friends and family. Having separate lists will also help you create more personal emails for your brides. (i.e. "the wedding is only 6 months away, have you ordered your invitations yet?")
    • Soft Opt-In: This is a feature Constant Contact offers to remind your subscribers about how you got their information. You can include a short message before the email letting them know why they received the email and giving the option to "unsubscribe" or "opt-in" to confirm future emails. (some examples: "You are receiving this email because we met at the Dallas Bridal Show and you registered to receive additional information..." "Thank you for contacting us through our website, this entitles you to receive emails containing important information and coupons...")
    • Confirmed Opt-In Email The "last resort" option is to send out an email to specific mailing lists which requires recipients to confirm their wish to receive future emails by responding or clicking on a link provided. If the recipient does not confirm opt-in, you may no longer send email to that address. Using the COI email can greatly decrease your total mailing list, but is the sure-fire way to weed out those that do not wish to receive your emails (and are not reading them) anyway.
    • Call Constant Contact: In our experience, the support team at Constant Contact has been very helpful and patient in regards to questions about protecting your account. Of course helping you and your business is in their best interest so don't be afraid to ask for help.

For more information regarding Constant Contact's "Confirmed Opt-In" options, read the COI User Guide.

    Limited Spaces Remaining!

The Fort Worth Bridal Show and Plano Bridal Show are closing quickly with some categories already closed. Please call 972-713-9920 to see what opportunities are available for you in these two great regional events!

The Fort Worth Bridal Show draws 700-1,000 brides out of 2,200 attendees and usually hosts around 120 companies. Although the Fort Worth Bridal Show draws brides from all areas of the Metroplex, the majority of the brides attending are from the Tarrant County area, making this a perfect event for targeting that region.

The Plano Bridal Show draws over 400 brides out of over 1,200 attendees and hosts over 100 companies. Although this is our smallest trafficking show, it has gained a reputation for appealing to the high-end bride and due to very limited space, closes out every time.

    Dallas Bridal Show: Review

On January 26-27, 2008, over 325 wedding businesses had the opportunity to promote their business face-to-face with over 3,000 brides! Out of the 3,000 brides in attendance, over 75% (2,287) brides registered at the front entrance. The show attracted a grand total attendance of 10,000 including paid adults, children, VIP tickets, media & press, and badged exhibitors.

Overall the show was a great success and we wish to thank all of the companies involved, especially our title sponsor Macy's for their participation.

Now is the time to follow up with all those brides throughout the year to create a steady flow of business from the show! We look forward to hearing even more success stories.

    Congratulations!!

The tallies are in and we have the winners from the coupon contest at the Dallas Bridal Show last month. Prizes will be awarded on the Dallas Bridal Show in July of 2008.

    by: Naomi Hulme

We are so excited to be coming upon our 20th Year Anniversary for the Dallas Bridal Show (2009) and the Plano Bridal Show (2009). The Fort Worth Bridal Show is in its 10th year this year (2008).

We have some fantastic events happening at the January 24-25, 2009 Dallas Bridal Show.

It has truly been an honor and a privilege to serve this industry and to work with each one of you, some whom we have known for many years. We really appreciate the many wonderful relationships over the years.

We want to show you how much we appreciate you at our 20th Year Anniversary Dallas Bridal Show, January 24-25, 2009.

The 20th Year Celebration will include:

    1. Vendor Appreciation Night right after the show on Saturday, January 24th. All exhibiting companies in the January 2009 Dallas Bridal Show, the February 2009 Fort Worth Bridal Show, and the March 2009 Plano Bridal Show are invited to attend this event. (RSVP's will be necessary--more information will be available later.)
    2. Many Door prizes will be given away that evening including one of my own Hawaii vacation weeks in Waikiki which will include hotel, air fare for two, and $500 spending money! (Must be present that evening to win door prizes.) (If you would like to donate a door prize to be used that evening, please send it to us in writing. You can email info@bridalshowsinc.com)
    3. Food! If you are a restaurant or a caterer in the January 2009 show, and would like to participate in this event by providing and serving food, please let us know. As a food provider for the Vendor Appreciation Night, we will donate an "extra" 10 x 10 booth to you. For example, when you reserve a 10 x 10 booth space, you will receive a 10 x 20 space. (when you reserve a 10 x 20 booth space, you will receive a 10 x 30 space, etc.) Flooring will be up to you for your booth space. This is one of our ways of saying thank you for helping us with the food for that evening. We hope that this will really help you shine and that the show will be more beneficial to you because of the additional booth exposure.

The Early-Bird forms for January and July 2009 will be sent to the July 2008 Dallas Bridal Show exhibitors some time in April or May.

As we have done before in previous vendor appreciation events, food vendors and door prize donations will be mentioned in the program and on signage at the event.

There are many other exciting things taking place at the January 2009 Show. You will not want to miss out on this event! Stay tuned to upcoming newsletters and our website for more information.

    BSI at the Entrepreneurs Expo

Bridal Shows, Inc. recently exhibited at the Entrepreneur Expo at the Fort Worth Convention Center on February 8, 2008.

(From Left to Right) Tamika, James, Naomi, and Bonnie used this opportunity to promote the upcoming Wedding Professionals Business Conference to small businesses looking for ways to achieve further growth.

It was a wonderful show and we were able to create many new contacts as well as connect with many existing clients also in attendance!

    A Sad Farewell

James Nutt has been a part of Bridal Shows, Inc. for over 15 years, both as an exhibitor and then for the past year and a half as an Account Executive for the company.

After exhibiting in our bridal shows for many years, James saw first hand the value of investing in a bridal show and the enormous success it brings to wedding business exhibitors. Because of his passion for bridal shows, he joined the Bridal Shows, Inc. staff in August of 2006 to help other companies succeed as well.

After so many years of dedication to the wedding industry, James has been given the opportunity to go back to his roots of interior design, which he originally went to college for. We are very excited that James has the opportunity to now follow his dream, although we will miss him very much.

James has promised to still attend the bridal shows to help out so his bridal show legacy will still continue.

Best of luck James, and thank you for all your years of customer service.

    Testimonial Time!

The sweetest Valentines that we've received have come by way of testimonials from some our of valued exhibitors!

"Great show this past weekend! We had a great time and productive show, as we always do when we do your shows. You are a class act. Having experienced other lackluster shows and lackluster folks in other cities/markets sure makes us at Tiki Trips appreciate you and your staff more than ever and helps us to realize what a fantastic job you do!"

    ~Dena McDonald, Tiki Trips

"Thank you Dallas Bridal Show for such a wonderful experience and great business opportunity! As a wedding musician in the DFW area I can honestly say there is no better way to meet brides and wedding professionals if weddings is what you do! The results of the show were so much higher than the expectations! The ability to talk to the brides, meet them and get to know them at a time when they are so excited about their wedding plans that they just won't go home without making their wedding reservations was priceless!

As a wedding musician for ceremony-cocktail- reception, I couldn't have shared my music anywhere else with so many brides in so little time! Singing, playing violin-piano-guitar in front of a crowd ready to listen. . . that's exactly what the brides were looking for: to hear the music and to meet the musician and ask ALL the questions they needed to know!

Thank you Dallas Bridal Show, I will be back year after year to meet the future brides, because this is where they all come first!"

    ~Radu Cernat, The Violin Guy

"Wanted to pass on this awesome news--we scheduled 95 spas, mostly in February, while at the January Dallas Bridal Show!! We are so excited! The bridal show is great for our business."

    ~Renee Alcala, BeautiControl Spa

    March 18, 2008

    Greetings!

Snow in March?!? What a crazy month! But then as the saying goes... "Only in Texas!" We hope everyone had a safe and fun winter wonderland. After one extreme week we were pleased that the Plano Bridal Show hosted beautiful 70 degree weather.

These past three months have been hectic and fun as we ended our first three bridal shows of the year. Now we are able to put all of our focus on the upcoming summer shows and beyond. Most of the summer shows are already over 70% booked, so call us to reserve your booth if you have not done so already.

Also don't forget about the big 20th Year Dallas Bridal Show in January, 2009. This is one event you can't afford to miss! It has been such a joy serving this industry since 1988 and in January we are going to celebrate BIG!

    Wishing you a productive month.

The seminar includes exhibiting tips, workbook, networking opportunities and door prizes! Where:Special Moments Chapel, 248 E. Round Grove Road , Lewisville, TX, 75067

    Visit Us on Myspace

That's right--we have officially joined myspace. In fact we actually have three different myspace pages to reflect our three bridal shows:

We will gradually build these pages as a resource for brides to get details regarding upcoming shows as well as comments and questions.

It will also be an avenue for brides to connect with professional wedding businesses. This is a great opportunity to network with businesses as well as promote to brides.

Since the pages were put into place about a week before the Plano Bridal Show, we have already developed a large number of "friends," mostly brides on the Plano Bridal Show myspace. We look forward to growing the rest of the pages as well.

If you have a myspace account and would like to join as a "friend" of one or all the shows, send us a friend request! The more the merrier.

We were so thrilled to receive the following email from a bride that attended our shows! She also used the Tips for Brides video that is posted on our website.

I just wanted you all to know that I have gone to many Bridal shows since getting engaged on Dec 24..and you guys have by far the absolute BEST bridal shows...I have gone to so many bridal shows (because I got free entrance but I paid for my friends to go in) and OMG there is not a bridal show that can compare to Bridal Show Inc. I have to tell you when I went to the Dallas Bridal show I was overwhelmed because I didn't know what to do but now I feel I am a pro because of you guys..You guys got me in "training" for the show I am waiting to attend before my wedding and finalizing my vendors..I have heard so many people comment on how organized I am..I tell them I learned it from going to the Dallas Bridal Show in January FIRST...the only thing I have gotten out of the other smaller bridal shows is a lot of free cake and free samples that I am going to use to make "goodie" bags for my bridesmaids.

Again Thank you and I look forward to hitting the shows in the Fall before my wedding on Oct 25, 2008.

Thanks for all the help and great tips

    Dhalia Condon & Gary Wood

And what did Dhalia think of the Plano Bridal Show?

Great show...I am glad I was able to make it. Not as big as Dallas but still ALOT to see..it still took me 3 hours to get through it all...thanks for a great show..you guys did another great job..see you at the Dallas show in July and for my last Bridal show in Sept in Plano again..Finalizing wedding with your Plano show..Wedding on Oct 25, 2008..Thanks for all your help and wonderful tips..

    Fort Worth and Plano Reviews

The past two months we have enjoyed two great bridal shows! The Fort Worth Bridal Show on February 23- 24, and the Plano Bridal Show on March 9.

693 registered brides out of 2,799 total attendance (includes paid adults, children, VIPs, & badged exhibitors) were able to meet face to face with over 100 wedding businesses at the Fort Worth Bridal Show in February. The show, sponsored by Fort Worth, Texas Magazine and CBS 11, was another success and will continue to bring exhibitors business throughout the year. Thank you to all the companies that participated in the event.

The results of the "Coupon Contest" from the Fort Worth Bridal Show are listed below. Winners will receive their prizes on the next Fort Worth Bridal Show on July 19-20, 2008.

    Fort Worth Coupon Contest Winners

First Place: (FREE 10 x 10 Booth) Perfect Wedding Guide

Second Place: ($300 off Booth) Bliss Bridal Salon

Third Place: ($150 off Booth) Party Machine DJ Service

The Plano Bridal Show drew 424 registered brides out of 1,682 total attendance (includes paid adults, children, VIPs, & badged exhibitors). Approximately 120 wedding businesses were present to showcase their businesses to the brides and their friends and family. Energy levels were high and the show was a catalyst for business relationships and more wedding bookings for the companies involved.

There was a "Coupon Contest" at the Plano Bridal Show as well. The winners of this contest will receive their prizes at the Plano Bridal Show on September 14, 2008.

Naomi's Notes: "Questions about exhibiting in other bridal shows"
    by: Naomi Hulme

We have had many calls and questions over the years about exhibiting in other bridal shows. This has definitely been more prevalent in the last four to five years.

As in our Exhibiting 101 seminar, we suggest that you do some research on your own so that you can make a smart business decision to keep your lead cost as minimal as possible. Some questions to ask new, non-established shows for this area are as follows:

    1. How many shows have you produced? And where? (Verify with the previous facilities that the shows actually took place.)
    2. How many shows have you produced in the Dallas/Fort Worth area? And where? (Verify same as #1.) If this is a new show to this market, it will be very difficult for anyone.
    3. Have you contracted with the facility with a deposit? (You can check this out with the facility.)
    4. Ask for names of companies and phone numbers as referrals from each show and call those companies yourself.
    5. What "real" number of brides have attended each event?
    6. What number of companies have exhibited in each event?
    7. What is your return percentage of exhibiting companies?
    8. What "real" advertising will take place? (This is a subject that I could spend hours on. So many have "talked a good game," some even with deep pockets.)
    9. Verify with each media source that the show is scheduled to advertise as they promised to you.
    10. Ask how many brides are expected at the upcoming show.
    11. Is your company a member of a wedding association (local or elsewhere) and in good standing?
    12. Ask what the show producer is going to do if they (a) do not deliver the brides that they say they will, (b) do not do what they say as far as advertising, or (c) cancel the show.

Being informed can save you a lot of money, time, and stress.

Do you think it is time for "new" shows to have to prove that what they say verbally or in writing is actual truth? If the show producer is not able to provide anything from the media sources, it is doubtful that it is truth.

As you can tell, we do care about you and this industry. There are some well-established bridal shows that do advertise in this market that can help improve your business.

Since we began producing shows in 1988, our foundation was and has always been "to do it right." We have utilized an extensive advertising campaign since the beginning and have done so even with any "new" show that we produced (i.e., the Denton Bridal Show). We are a professional company which maintains an office in Addison five days a week with a full-time staff. Not including the home improvement show that we sold ten years ago and many other types of shows, we have spent over six million dollars advertising the bridal shows. We do what we say we are going to do. You know your money is well spent with our company. You also know that you are safe with doing business with us as we are proven and established and consistent year after year--and have been from the very beginning.

We offer a superior value in this marketplace and are continuing to set a higher standard of professionalism for this industry.

Continue to feel free to call us with any questions. We hope to help you in making an informed decision about your marketing dollars.

    More Testimonials

The Winter/Spring 2008 Bridal Show season has now concluded, and we've received more testimonials on how these shows have worked for the exhibitors.

"I just wanted to compliment you on yet another wonderful (Dallas) show! We had our best show to date. We didn't book as many brides as years past, but the quality of the brides was great and I believe we had more serious shoppers than ever before. Also, I'm currently experiencing more phone calls and emails from those who saw us at the show than ever before. We also had more click throughs than ever from your site. I was happy to see that a couple vendors I had suggested join the show did so. I will continue to reccomend you guys!"

    Jamie Jaksch, Threejays Carriages

"I write this note to let you all know how successful the Dallas and Ft. Worth Bridal Shows have been for me. I have been in business only a year and a half, and after doing three shows, I am almost totally booked for '08 and am booking into August of '09. The crowds are bigger in Dallas, but the folks are more laid back in Fort Worth and are so thankful to have someone listen to what they want, rather than having someone pushing his or her own agenda. I have received referrals from people for whom I have not yet done work and even received an email from a mother after her return to S. Carolina this past weekend who notes differences in creativity and personality. Only by meeting people face-to-face can this be accomplished. Otherwise, I would just be one of the first names in the phone book. In both Dallas and Fort Worth, I have received overwhelming response to my designs and am off and running with a great career that I totally love. Thank you, Dallas Bridal Shows!"

    ~Gloria Parker, Blooming Accents

"As a followup to the Fort Worth Bridal Show that we just participated in I wanted to say "Thank You." At DJ Connection we participate in nearly every show available from Kansas City to Dallas, and we LOVE YOUR SHOWS the best. The "Brides-To-Be" that show up at your events actually have upcoming weddings and generally not just window shoppers like we see at many of the shows that do not charge admission. Your bridal fair lists are always emailed promptly and the traffic at the shows is always consistent."

    Clay Clark, DJ Connections

    Special Note from PWG President

You never know how something you say may impact the life of someone else. God works in our lives and our businesses in mysterious ways.

The following letter was sent to us after we attending the PWG meeting on February 27th. Naomi donated a book called "Letting Go of Your Bananas" by Dr. David T. Drubin and talked about a section of the book with an enlightening analogy. It says that there's a reason our windhield is several times bigger than our review mirror. It's because we should be looking forward at what's ahead more than what's behind us.

Naomi also won the PWG "Visionary of the Year" award at the meeting. (She won this same award last year from PWG also)

    Naomi,

It was wonderful to see all of you at PWG today and I appreciate all the support you give to the Guild. I was especially moved by what you said today when you donated the book and thought you might enjoy the rest of the story. God works in mighty way.

One of our Sunday School class members just had surgery and I took dinner to the family tonight. Her husband was a minister but had a devastating experience at the last church he pastored and has been feeling very distrustful of people and relationships. While we were talking this evening he brought up the hurt he was feeling.

I said..."Oh, let me share with you what I heard today at our Guild meeting." I gave him a little background and then told him about the windshield - looking forward and not behind. You said it so well. He looked at me and said - "You know you are so right, that's exactly what I've been doing and that's not right". We never know how God is going to use us to touch the lives of others.

Congratulations on your award - you really deserved it.

    Thanks

    Lora Lea Nelson
    President
The Professional Wedding Guild of Fort Worth

    Happy (Belated)
    St. Patrick's Day!

Check out the following article by Dean Lindsay who may be speaking at the 2008 Wedding Professionals Business Conference on November 19, 2008, if his schedule permits.

"Six Degrees of Practice": by Dean Lindsay

Networking is a skill. As with any skill, you will get better at it with practice. To be proactive in building priceless business relationships, it is vital that you get over the stuff about networking that bothers you. If you are scared of meeting people or if you're worried about having nothing to say or becoming tongue-tied, role-play with a friend until you feel more confident.

The more you exercise your networking muscles, the stronger they get and the easier networking becomes. Networking is hard when you feel you HAVE to, and so easy when you feel you WANT to.

Attitudes are contagious. Are yours worth catching?

Remember, networking is as natural as eating and sleeping. We do it all the time. Whenever you talk with others and ask their opinions to help you make an informed decision - even if it's just to find a good book, tire store, or dog groomer - you're networking. Networking is a vital quality -of-life skill that anyone can utilize to make more opportunities.

Meeting people is not really that tough, but connecting with people and making a great first impression is. With practice, great first impressions can be honed and perfected. Practice on strangers - even that dude wearing flip-flops in front of you in line at Mickey D's.

Start striking up conversations with strangers in lines (grocery store checkout, movie ticket, hot dog stand, etc.). Make connecting a habit. Practice every day, every chance you get.

Remember, every contact enlarges your net and gets you closer to the people who could enrich your life or utilize your products and services.

"You gotta try your luck at least once a day, because you could be going around lucky all day and not even know it." -- Jimmy Dean

Speak to as many people as possible, get as many business cards as you can, and exchange e- mail addresses. Keep making contact. Keep in touch with those you wish to influence. Communicate regularly with pivotal people in your industry and in other industries. Many have enormous power that could help you gain access to almost anyone, many of whom you could never reach on your own.

If you have support from these people, you will save yourself a lot of time and trouble in getting where you want to go. Doors will seem to magically fly open for you.

You are only a few contacts away from a great opportunity. Do you remember the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game? It was all the rage a few years back. The game is based on the main concept in John Guare's play Six Degrees of Separation, which was adapted into a movie with Will Smith. The play theorizes that we are all connected by six or fewer stages of circumstance or acquaintance.

Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon takes this concept one step further (or back). Kevin Bacon has been in a ton of movies and many of them were ensemble films, like Diner and Mystic River. If you use Kevin as an end point, you can link him in six steps (degrees) or fewer to almost any other performer. For example, Kevin Bacon links to John Lithgow in one quick link: Both were in Footloose. (1)

Kris Kristofferson, however, may take all six steps to make the chain. Let's see:
Kris was in A Star Is Born with Barbra Streisand. (1)
Barbra was in The Way We Were with Robert Redford. (2)
Robert was in Brubaker with Morgan Freeman. (3)
Morgan was in Driving Miss Daisy with Dan Ackroyd. (4)
Dan was in The Blues Brothers with John Belushi. (5)
John was in Animal House with Kevin Bacon. (6)

I'm sure you can get from Kris to Kevin in fewer moves, but I wanted to give an example of the full six degrees of separation.

    Wildly Unimportant FYI:

I am linked to Kevin in two moves.
Dean was in Twister with Bill Paxton. (1)
Bill was in Apollo 13 with Kevin Bacon. (2)

Yes, I was in Twister. Don't blink. The flying cow ended up with a bigger part than I did. I was one of the 'bad guys' driving the black vans.

There is so much I could share that is interesting but not relevant to this topic. I will share this: Bill Paxton is cool. Great everyman- type leader. Grade-A stuff. He makes everyone around him feel great. Bill Paxton rocks.

    Be Progress.

We are gearing up for the Wedding Professionals Business Conference on November 19th and can't wait to be inspired and motivated with everyone in attendance at this business-to-business event.

As has been requested by past attendees we are working to have more exhibitors this year so that you can meet with business professionals focused on building small businesses. Part of this effort involves participating in various meet-up events and networking groups.

On Monday, April 28th we promoted the conference at the "DFW Do-It-Yourself PR Mega Networking Event and Business Expo" held at the Studio Movie Grill in Addison. (see picture above) We had a lot of fun, and more importantly were able to meet many interesting professionals!

We are also looking forward to being a sponsor at the
    "Bob Burg's Endless Referrals LIVE"
on June 24, 2008. This is going to be another great opportunity for learning, as well as promoting the Conference!

Naomi's Notes: "Sales--Asking the Right Questions"
    by: Naomi Hulme

To build a relationship of trust, we must show we care by asking the right questions. Whether you are a one-person business or the leader of a sales team, we all need to learn the art of asking questions. This is a life time of learning. Every year I learn something new in this department. I think communication is asking questions and sincerely listening to the answers. The benefit is that others will then be more willing to listen to you. In the book, "Power Phrases! The Perfect Words to Say it Right and Get the Results you Want," by Meryl Runion," she writes "When you listen, listen as though you were going to be tested on what they say. Listen for the three crucial points: what do they think, what do they feel, and what do they want."

We are all in sales no matter what our position is. We either sell someone about (1) believing in us and our product or service, or (2) a new movie we saw or a new book we read or a new product we bought and liked, or (3) not liking something that was listed in #2, or (4) persuading someone in our family to do something that we want them to do, etc. I think you get the picture. We can all persuade someone else in some way.

With the leads that you get either from shows or wedding publications or websites, it is imperative that you work those leads persistently. So many that I talk to may only contact their leads 3 or 4 times. This is not enough. Those companies that are working their leads up to 12 to 15 times are the ones getting the most business. Remember to contact your leads until they tell you to go away. So many times they will be glad that you were persistent because they were busy, also. When you contact your leads, think of as many questions as you can that will help you through the sales process. The right questions can actually create real interest.

In this article, we are going to pretend that you are an invitation business, even though these questions can be adapted to whatever business you are in. What questions could you ask potential customers? Some of the following are very basic but can lead to many other in-depth questions. These are not in any particular order and are intended to give you a few ideas which will challenge you to think up other questions that are relevant to your business and that will help produce results.

    To Brides:
    1. Have you ordered your invitations yet?
    2. What can we do to make your invitations special?
    3. What is a unique feature that you want on your invitations?
    4. What ideas do you have?
    5. Would you mind if we brainstormed here for a few hours with our team and get back with you?
    6. Can we show you some of our ideas that might work with what you are wanting?
    7. What are some of the unique things that you are doing with your wedding? Maybe we could incorporate some of those ideas within the invitation.
    8. What colors are you planning to use?
    9. Approximately how many invitations will you need?
    10. Do you also want "Save the Date" invitations for a reminder a few months out?
    11. Do you have an idea of your budget for this part of the wedding?
    12. How important are invitations in your planning process?
    13. What can we do to make you feel very positive about doing business with us?
    14. Is it okay if we email you monthly specials and updates with new information and ideas?
    15. Can we keep you on a mailing list even after the wedding for other invitation needs? Such as birthdays, births, proms, anniversaries, parties, etc.?
    16. Can we help you in finding another vendor for any other part of your wedding?

So many wedding businesses have the potential for other types of business-anniversaries, births, proms, birthdays, parties, Business to Business, which can create many other questions for you to consider.

The key is to be creative and brainstorm and jot down any question that you can think of and then refine those questions to be the right question for the right customer. Care about helping the person and the right questions will come to mind.

    Audio-Tech Business Book Summaries

For those of you like to listen to cd's--maybe in the car on the way to and from work--log on to www.AudioTech.com and check out the subscription for monthly cd's. Any time we either read a book or listen to a cd, we can pick up all kinds of ideas for our own businesses. Many times, the ideas that have hit me do not have anything to do with what I just heard. When we are constantly learning and improving, we will start thinking of all kinds of creative ideas--it just causes us to expand our knowledge and use more of our brain power that is just sitting there waiting to be used. Because time is precious, listening to these condensed versions of various books can provide new information without having to read a whole book. If you are like me, it can cause you to want to go buy a certain book and read the whole thing. That is what happened to me with "Ready, Fire, Aim," by Michael Masterson.

If you would like a copy of my Book Suggestions, please let us know and we can email that information to you. Any time you are going to be near our office in Addison, please let us know ahead of time and stop by and see if we have an extra copy of one of the books that you would like to read. Those of you who know me well know I encourage reading and give away books all the time.

    Have fun reading and learning!

    Naomi

    Happy Anniversary!

"Good Afternnoon, thank you for calling Bridal Shows, this is Betty!"

If you have ever called us before then you have heard those pleasant words from our receptionist, Betty Yankie. This month on April 21, Betty celebrated her two year anniversary with the company, and we all benefit from her positive upbeat energy that she brings with her every day. Thank you Betty for helping give Bridal Shows, Inc. a wonderful first-impression with every phone call. Happy Anniversary!

    Hope your Business is Blooming!

Is your business blooming this spring? If so, share with us your success stories and what you are doing to continually grow! If not, let us help you build your business through the upcoming summer bridal shows!

Here is one example of a business that is "blooming" by exhibiting in bridal shows.

    Naomi,

Circle Park Bridal Shop opened seven months ago as a brand new bridal boutique with an unusual concept and experience (both of which are very difficult to relay through print or online marketing). In order to deliver a solid image to our brand from the very start, we felt we needed brides to both see our gowns and meet us in person. Even though we had other extensive advertising in place, these one-on-ones to initially "get the word out" about our shop were very important to us.

Being that I had recently relocated to Texas, I was not personally familiar with any of the area bridal shows or the reputations of the trade show /event companies in DFW. I quickly became acquainted with seasoned local wedding professionals and when asked about bridal events that deliver, the one constant was "get involved with Naomi's shows". Just eleven days after Circle Park Bridal opened for business, we exhibited at the Plano Bridal Show. I was extremely satisfied with the quality and the quantity of brides attending this show. The interest was genuine. A significant number of brides we met at the show became "our brides" and attendees from September's Plano Show were still coming into the shop well into January.

With such success from Plano, we signed on to exhibit at the January 2008 Dallas Bridal Show. Two weeks after participating in that show, we held Circle Park Bridal's First Annual Running of the Brides Event. The response was absolutely incredible! Two- hundred and fifty people lined up outside the event, waiting for the doors to open! We received incredible print and television coverage and attribute a large number of brides in attendance to those we met at the Dallas Bridal Show.

Naomi, we have become huge advocates and apostles of Bridal Shows Inc.! We have participated in a few other bridal shows, but it is your bridal shows that have delivered the best value for the time and money invested. We have also been thrilled with the website advertising on www.bridalshowsinc.com Please know from a vendor stand point what a treat is has been to work with a such a nice group of professionals, both at your office and the second team "on the floor" at your shows!

    Sincerely,

    Andrea Porter, Owner
    Circle Park Bridal, LLC

    Electronic Exhibitor Packets

Each year we try to advance in this rapidly growing tech-savvy world, and this summer will begin sending exhibitor packets (kits for exhibitors prior to a show) via email in "pdf" format rather than going through the "snail mail."

This will be an experiment for us and we are hoping that it will help exhibitors receive their packets in a timely manner, readily accessible, and easier to manage. The exhibitor packet is an important part of preparing for a show. It contains information regarding rules & regulations, set-up/take down, coupon contests, deadlines, and other pertinent information.

If you are currently registered to exhibit in a show this summer, watch for your exhibitor packet to arrive via email roughly 60 days before the event. You may want to confirm your email address with us to be sure it goes to the appropriate inbox.

Stay tuned to next month's newsletter for an interview with a bride and groom that attended both the July 2007 Dallas Bridal Show and the January 2008 Dallas Bridal Show and are getting married in Washington.

We have heard from several vendors that destination weddings are becoming a trend, so we are interested to see what a couple planning a event out-of-town is looking for at a local bridal show.

    Motivational Message

"When I prepare for a sales presentation, I try to think like my client and like my competitor. I try to pinpoint every objection that either of them could make to my presentation. I write these objections down, and then I figure out a way to respond to each one in three lines or less. I've given these 'scripts' to sales reps, who then used them in their presentations. It's staggering how even the most boring sales rep can become a great salesperson simply by learning to convey a few simple points. If you can move a customer so that he or she can't argue against your point, then you've won."

Many of the brides in attendance are planning far in advance. Give your company an edge by meeting with brides face to face to show them how you can help build their dream wedding.

Categories are closing, but there are several openings remaining. So call us today to see which opportunities are available to you for the Dallas Bridal Show on July 12-13, the Fort Worth Bridal Show on July 19-20, and the Plano Bridal Show on September 14.

Exhibiting 101 Testimonial: Never Give Up!

We have been encouraged to hear so many great things from last month's Exhibiting 101 seminar and continue to get testimonials! The following letter is from Exhibiting 101 attendee, Sheila Williamson with Tea N' Mystery.

After reading this testimonial, hopefully there will be no denying the benefits of networking and learning through such events, and you will be encouraged to book your attendee reservation for the upcoming Conference!

    Bonnie and Naomi,

I am so sorry it has taken me so long to write this, but, nevertheless, it still comes from the heart!

At the Exhibiting 101 Workshop, several wonderful things happened to me that I wanted to pass along to you both!

    1. Carolyn (the host) became interested in my business because of the referral from Naomi and has booked a Murder Mystery on July 12.
    2. Rebecca of Anna Skye custom invitations has become interested in my business and we are going to be working on a joint venture, www.bridalteaparty.com
    3. Naomi gave some tips about following up on leads and how not to give up on brides or customers in general until they tell you to quit calling!

A few weeks before that, a customer had called and spoken with my husband about being interested in a graduation tea party. Of course, I called this person several times, never reaching her except for her to say, it was inconvenient and she would call me back. Of course, she never did! The next day or so, after the workshop, I was organizing my desk, found her number, and decided to call her once more. Of course, I got her answering machine and I promptly threw the note away.

Within, five minutes, the customer called back and apologized for not ever calling me and still wanted me to cater this party. As luck would have it, we were available on the date she had in mind, and she paid me a deposit immediately! I hired my staff, planned, shopped, and prepped. When the day arrived, she called just to make sure we were still coming! I assured her we would be there momentarily and then we proceeded to get lost. When we called again to get directions, she was apologetic again because the street sign was down. When we arrived a few moments later, it was to a 350 acre multi million dollar property unlike any other I had ever been to. The customer was lovely, the guests were so appreciative and we have already received a new booking from that!

There is no telling how much business we will gain from this job, which, I had already given up on before I made the last ditch effort call.

    THANK YOU NAOMI!!!

    Sheila Williamson
    Tea 'n Mystery
    Catering Elegant Affairs

We all know how trying it can be to keep after a particular lead... but throwing out a lead could potentially cost your company tons of business! Never give up and keep your follow up consistent, who knows where your persistence may lead you!

    Plano Chamber of Commerce Ribbon-Cutting

Although we have been represented at chamber meetings for the Plano Chamber of Commerce for several months, on May 14th, Bridal Shows, Inc. was officially inducted into the chamber through an on-site ribbon-cutting.

Members from the chamber gathered at the Bridal Shows, Inc. office in Addison to network and witness the Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony. Thank you to the following vendors for helping us host the event:

    • Delicious Cakes -- delicious cake featuring the Bridal Shows, Inc. logo
    • C's Florist -- three beautiful arrangements to brighten the office
    • Balloons by Design -- two balloon arrangements to greet guests at the door

We look forward to continuing our relationship with the Plano Chamber and hope to see many of you there as well!

Naomi's Notes: "Changes for Positive Results"
    by: Naomi Hulme

We are all going to experience lots of changes in any business, especially over the long-term. Changes can open doors and create other opportunities.

Sometimes changes happen out of our control. We have a choice in how we handle this. It is up to us individually to keep a positive attitude and continue to move forward to create positive results. This can also help you in generating great new ideas.

Other times change is in our control and is a necessary thing. We might have to make many tough decisions that affect so many to keep things positive.

Continually evaluate every aspect of your business to see what positive changes can be made. Some of the main components of your business to evaluate are:

    1. Marketing and Advertising to get the best cost per lead.
    2. Profits and Cutting Costs
    3. Reduce Risk and Loss
    4. Training and Coaching Staff
    5. Customer Benefits
    6. Customer Service and Value
    7. Product Improvements
    8. Using New Technology
    9. Personal Improvement

We should look at change as a good thing and open our eyes to new directions. Welcome change into your business. It is often a blessing in disguise.

Paul Salos on America's Got Talent!

PAUL SALOS was the BIGGEST WINNER with his "Tribute to Sinatra, The Man & His Music" at 11:00 A.M. Thursday March 6, 2008 at the Majestic Theater in Dallas, Texas.

When Paul started singing, 1200 plus people in attendance got on their feet and started applauding. When he finished the song there was the loudest roar of appreciation, a standing ovation and the entire audience chanting "Vegas, Vegas, Vegas!!!"

The three judges all gave Paul very high compliments: "We have had a lot of people that said they sing like Sinatra, but you have the mannerisms, the style, the phrasing and most of all the VOICE! You were wonderful, superb and the best Sinatra we have had on the show. You are going to Las Vegas!!"

The show will be video taped for National TV from Las Vegas from May 10 through May 16, 2008. The show will air June 17, 2008.

Go to America's Got Talent for more information.

    Stop Chasing the Clock
    by: Sarah Zink

The following article regarding Time Management is by one of our upcoming Conference Speakers, Sarah Zink, of Sarah Zink Business Training.

It's time to take control of your time! And if you're a business owner that means you have to organize your time and find the sources of information that get you what you need to know NOW. If you're a business professional working for a company, that means that you have to organize your time and find resources that help you get and stay focused.

    Who ultimately owns your time?

Think about a given day for yourself. If you're like most people, you are behind from the moment you get up to the moment you go to bed. In addition to that, the number one reason that many people have trouble sleeping is that they lay awake thinking about all the things they didn't get done that day, or all the things they have to do the next day.

Depressing, isn't it? But it doesn't have to be that way! Years ago, I heard a saying that has revolutionized the way I think about my time and my choices: "Take Control of Your Destiny, or Someone Else Will." It's as true for you as it is for me. Your time is YOURS, and to re-take ownership of your time you have to stop the madness that takes place in any given day.

    How to Manage Your Time:

Cost Your Time: Figure out what each hour costs you. The next time you want to spend time on a task, you'll consider the cost.

Chart Your Time: Plan your day, or everyone else will! Block out two or three times a day to check and return voicemails and emails (rather than as they come in), block out time to do that report you hate (first thing in the morning is best), and block time to take breaks.

Control Your Time: Be aggressive about managing your time! You must mentally prepare yourself to say "no" or "not now" to your friends, family and co-workers. Like a diet, people will want to get you off-track, but like a diet, only YOU keep yourself on track.

Concentrate on Results: As you manage your time, focus on results. What is it going to take to get you where you want to be? Make time every day to take actions that move you toward your goals.

Use a Clock and Calendar: When you find yourself challenged to finish tasks, begin by assigning priorities by date. Always ask: "When's it due?" That will help you put things in order by due date.

This article is from the February 08 issue of Sarah Zink's newsletter, "Think Zink." To learn more about Sarah, click here.

    Greetings!

Well it looks like we are in for another HOT summer in Texas! Make sure you drink plenty of fluids at those outdoor weddings to fight off dehydration. Summer is an exciting time for our industry, but it can also spell exhaustion if we are not careful. Try to carve out some time for yourself whenever you can to refresh your mind before darting out to meet the next bride.

It is easy to get behind when you are so busy, so try to focus a few minutes each day on what you are doing to secure your company's future. Constant growth leads to more and more success, and we want to help you get there.

We are looking forward to our two summer shows, the Dallas Bridal Show on July 12-13, and the Fort Worth Bridal Show on July 19-20. We hope to see you there!

    Naomi's Notes: "Do Your Best"
    by: Naomi Hulme

Whatever you did today, learn something from it and do it better tomorrow.

When tomorrow gets here, which is today, think about one or two things that you learned to do different or better yesterday. Then, be the best you can be in those areas today.

In other words, if we try to do our best each day, it makes us better and more confident than the day before. That way, we are always working to improve.

    Benefits of Summer Bridal Shows

Summer is a busy time for everyone, but especially in our industry. Many of you have multiple weddings every weekend and are working hard to make the most out of the busy season. However it is still important to continue marketing during this time.

What are some benefits to exhibiting in a summer bridal show?

  • Consistency. Any marketing specialist will tell you that the key to successful marketing is consistency. When brides visit the shows in July they are often looking for companies they saw in the spring shows. When they are not there, they wonder if they are out of business, all booked up, or no longer interested. The more you are out there in front of the customer the more legitimate your company comes across.
  • Security. Even if you are booked until 2009, you are re-filling your sales funnel with new leads that will book down the road. Many brides attending the shows are planning weddings 1-2 years out. Secure the future of your business by never lacking in leads.
  • Stay Competitive. By missing a show, you could be losing your edge over the competition. If you are not present at the show, the bride may think she has no other option than to go with who is there.
  • The Numbers Game. Some feel that the summer shows are not as large as the spring shows and therefore are not important. This is simply not true, the Dallas July show brings in over 2,000 brides and the Fort Worth July show draws 700-1,000 brides. Why pass up a connection with over 2,700 brides? Also keep in mind that the July Dallas show is now drawing the numbers that the January show was bringing in five years ago and continues to grow.
  • There are several reasons why companies may not book a summer show. As stated earlier, it is a busy time and difficult to staff. Others have tried a summer show before but haven't been able to do quality follow up because of busy schedules. Remember, the show can still be a success if you have to hire staffing, or have a friend man the booth, and try to contact your leads as soon as you can no matter how busy you are. Even if compromises and sacrifices have to be made, the exhibitors of the July shows will tell you it's worth it.

If you need help in coming up with solutions to be able to fit a summer show into your schedule, give us a call! It may be too late for this summer, but there is always time to plan ahead.

Naomi's Notes: "Marketing in a Tough Economy"
    by: Naomi Hulme

Making smart business decisions during a tough economy is even more critical than any other time. Change is going to continue forever for us and we must always be prepared for it. Meet it head-on and be proactive, not reactive. Change is actually opportunity in disguise.

Before a tough economy happens, plan ahead for having the cash flow to take you through that time. Keep other expenses under control so you are able to add to your marketing budget. A lot of companies will reduce their marketing budget first when a financially challenged economy takes place. That gives way for competitors to gain a huge advantage.

According to David Beckham, B,BA,MBA, in an article dated May 24, 2008, from MarketProMBA , he stated "Businesses that succeed in tough times know the secret is smarter marketing."

One way to help you through part of this time is to call on your current customers to look for other potential business. As a wedding business, there are so many other potential profit areas for what you do. Whether your category is event planning, photography, DJ, florist, invitations, balloons, travel, attire, videography, cakes, catering, cosmetics, facility, rentals, restaurant, gifts, limo, music, jewelry, nutrition, lighting, spa, fitness, or many others, you have other reasons to call on your current customers. There are many other events such as birthdays, anniversaries, births, proms, or any other type of party that you could profit from. What better way to get additional business than to work your current database.

Do not forget to create new customers by doing the marketing that gets you the best results. Tough economies will be one of the many reasons that you may lose a certain number of customers. This means you will need to keep your business awareness stronger than ever to replace that business as well as add new.

One sure way to help your business through a tough economy is to exhibit in quality shows that will continue to bring you new leads. We advertise to a new bride every show. Through the course of a year, we will deliver 8,000 brides to you face to face. Our extensive marketing campaign has given real results to hundreds of wedding businesses for twenty (20) years now.

Barbara Dennis, Director of Marketing, Siding Products Group, at CertainTeed Corporation said "In these uncertain times with businesses closing/filing for bankruptcy, there's a real comfort level and confidence in doing business with a company that's going to be there for you in the long run."

We are committed to the long run in helping you thrive in your business, not just to survive. Let us know if you would like to meet regarding your marketing during this tough time.

"A wise man makes more opportunities than he finds." Francis Bacon

    Tips from a Seasoned Exhibitor

Each vendor at the bridal show is always coming up with creative ideas of how to attract brides to their booth. The vendors design tall displays- unique, comical, scary - you name it, it has already been done. But with a giveaway promotion, what is the benefit to the vendor? Do vendors have everyone sign up for the drawing? What if the bride does not need the vendor's services? How will the vendor know?

To ensure the vendor is getting the most from the giveaway campaign, they must ask the brides how their business can assist in realizing her vision. By adopting this process, the vendor has a better percentage of the brides interested in their services. If the vendor's objective is to gather as many names as possible, look into obtaining the bride list from the show. The bride list is a great tool to work and will give the vendor access to thousands of potential brides. Time to get started - happy dialing/emailing!

    Myspace.com = Added Exposure

As many of you are aware we created myspace pages for our three bridal shows back in February to help promote the shows to the female 18-34 market. Myspace.com is an opportunity for additional free publicity and is another way we can communicate with the brides to be in the area. Our myspace pages give brides additional information about each show including door prize details, stage schedules, special events taking place, and a complete listing of the companies that will be present at the show.

As an added bonus to our exhibitors we began listing the company names of all the businesses exhibiting in each show. This helps the bride create a plan of action at the show and pre-determine who she will need to talk with.

We also enjoy using this avenue as a means to receive messages and insight directly from the brides such as the following comment...

"Your posting on myspace has worked out wonderfully! It's nice to be able to go there and get all the information! I appreciate the coupon for the bride getting in free with 4 paid guests. That's awesome. Maybe just one suggestion is to have a list of all the the vendors somewhere on the myspace page as well - like it is on the actual Dallas Bridal Show website! Thanks again for making wedding planning a much easier process! I'm looking forward to the show Saturday!"

If you have myspace page for your business, be sure to add each of our shows as a "friend" so we can stay connected to work together. Complete myspace websites are listed further on in the newsletter before the "New Posters" article.

Naomi's Notes: "Are You A High Achiever?"
    by: Naomi Hulme

In my opinion, a high achiever is someone who sincerely cares, works hard and smart, and who tries to do their best every day, along with teaching that principle to others. To achieve something, you have to stick with it until it is complete, to finish what you start. Before you start that something, you have to figure out your goal of what exactly it is that you are going to accomplish, when you plan on accomplishing it, and how you are going to accomplish it. In doing all of the above, if it is done with integrity and fairness, you will have the feeling of being successful and feeling good about what you have accomplished. Also, a lot of other people around you will have the same feelings about what you do.

In being a high achiever, you will find a few along the way that disagree with you. Do not let those few worry you or pull you down. It is just part of what takes place when someone is trying to be successful and achieve more.

In the book that I suggested for this month's newsletter, it reads:

"One of the greatest thoughts I've ever heard is "You will be the same in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read." You know, that's absolutely true." (from "Life is Tremendous," by Charlie "Tremendous" Jones)

Keep reading every day and you will continue to understand and know what it takes to succeed. It is not really the point of "getting there," but the journey that we are always on, the learning from our mistakes. If we have a goal and get there at some point, then we must have the next goal to work toward, so that we are always moving forward to accomplish more each year. "Succeed" in Webster's New World College Dictionary is defined as "to happen or turn out as planned or attempted, to achieve or accomplish something planned or attempted, to have or enjoy success, realize a goal or goals, etc." So you see, success can be what you define it as, what you have accomplished.

In achieving for those higher results, keep in mind the word "balance" so that you have harmony in the middle of the chaos. Even though most people would tell you that I am a "workaholic," I really do have balance in my life. It has definitely helped me to keep my work and personal life very stable, which creates joy in everything I do.

"The toughest thing about success is that you've got to keep on being a success." Irving Berlin (1888-1989), American composer.

    New Bridal Shows, Inc. Employee

Nicole Albanese is the newest addition to the Bridal Shows, Inc. team, however she is not new to bridal shows! Nicole has been part of our "on-site" team at shows for four years helping take tickets, register brides, checking in exhibitors, etc. If you were at our Dallas or Fort Worth July shows last month you may remember her as the "girl with her arm in a sling." :-)

Nicole will be working in the Bridal Shows, Inc. office under the title of "Special Projects" and will also be assisting with the upcoming Business Conference and Bonnie Crumpton's clients when Bonnie is on Maternity Leave mid-January through early March.

Please help us welcome Nicole to the team!

    Thinking of Skipping A Show?

Don't make the mistake of missing a show because you are too busy. Your calendar may be full at the moment, but by staying in the shows consistently you are building yourself up for the future. Take a look at what a recent exhibitor said about missing a show:

    "Naomi,

I did not participate in any of the Bridal Shows during this year, 2008. I was looking over my weddings year-to-date and I noticed that 70% of the weddings I have done in 2008 were the results of attending the 2007 Bridal Show.

Just think of how many more weddings I would have done in 2008 if I had participated in the 2008 Bridal Show.

Lesson learned. Enclosed please find my participation form and payment for both January and July 2009 shows.

With the threat of a hurricane many people were concerned about the Plano Bridal Show. However Bridal Shows, Inc. stuck to its "show must go on" mentality and in the end everything worked out to make for a beautiful day on Sunday, September 14th at the Plano Centre.

A total of 466 registered brides out of 1,700 attendees (including paid adults, children, grooms, VIPs, and badged exhibitors) visited with over 100 exhibitors at this exciting event. As usual we closed out on space with a packed house of interesting bridal companies.

    Naomi's Notes: "Promote your Website!"
    by: Naomi Hulme

Whether you design and manage your website yourself or hire someone to do this, it is very important to the success of your business. How do others know about your website?

Promote your website in everything you do, such as on all of your brochures, invoices, any advertising or marketing materials, flyers, at bridal shows and other shows, through wedding associations, ads in wedding publications, posters, cd's, invitations, business cards, pens/pencils, specialty promotional items, note pads, media kits, direct mail pieces, calendars, press releases, your newsletter, email blasts, your email signature area, other website advertising, cross-promoting links with other websites, and anything else that is given to potential clients or companies that you wish to network with. Do not miss any opportunity to promote your website.

Review and evaluate your website on a consistent basis. It should be user friendly, have good information that interests others, stay updated, consistent with all of your other marketing materials, show new products or services that you are offering, and show dates and locations of events that you participate in. Tracking the results of how others found your website is critical to know what marketing avenues are working for you.

There are many ways to use your website to sell items and add revenue to the bottom line if you have a product or service that can be sold through your website.

Frequency is the key to great marketing. When you promote your business through all of the areas listed in the first paragraph, you will find that you are getting the best results compared to someone who is only doing one or just a few of these marketing or advertising avenues. Frequency holds true and has been proven by so many thousands of companies.

Make your website easy to see and read in everything. It is the hub that connects everything that we do now to market our business.

If you do not have a website, it is a must in today's market. Anyone interested in doing business with you will want to check you and your company out via your website. If you do not have a website, they may just move on to someone else that does.

Keep in mind that our website, along with all of the other avenues listed in this article, are amazing tools for thriving in business. Be sure your website is effective in enticing potential business back again and again.

    Promoting the Conference

Bonnie Crumpton and Nicole Albanese of Bridal Shows, Inc. have been out at local networking events and expos promoting our upcoming business conference.

On September 16, 2008 they participated in the Small Business Boot Camp Expo held by the North Texas Small Business Alliance at Office Expo in Dallas.

September 29, 2008 they spread the word about the Conference at the DFW Business Network's Mega Networking Event at the Studio Movie Grill in Addison.

    New Bridal Shows, Inc. Employee

Naomi's Notes: "Main Reason Some Companies Do Not Do Well from Shows"
    by: Naomi Hulme

Everything you do must be a win-win situation, a win for you, a win for the bride, and a win for the industry. You do that by giving the bride the opportunity to do business with you. We all can get very busy and feel like we don't have time to make calls or emails or put together a direct mail campaign, but it is so important for this win-win experience. Some people have a fear to call or contact people for their business. According to Marvin F. Brown, Sr., "If you do what no one else wants to do, you'll always be busy." Sales is the one critical component of building a business. Without sales, there is no business. Sales are generated through leads we obtain from various sources. Quality shows give you the tool to get those leads face-to-face.

There are different choices of making contacts with potential clients. Some may be comfortable with calling and emailing. Others may only be comfortable with direct mail because of the fear of contacting people personally. Still others may only be comfortable with getting referrals from other wedding vendors-this is where the networking is critical. No matter what we are comfortable with, we have to work our leads somehow to be successful.

The biggest reason someone may say "The show did not work" is that the leads received were not worked properly. Working leads is probably the most important part of making any show or advertising bring results.

For any business to be successful, others must know about the business more than once or twice. If it bothers you to call or contact your leads in various ways, it is going to be very difficult for you to stay in business for the long-term.

Generating leads that hopefully turn into future business is the goal for all advertising and marketing. Once a lead is generated, they will need to hear or see your message many times to even start noticing you. Even though it is lengthy, this next information is very important for everyone to read.

In the book, "Guerrilla Marketing for Free," Jay Conrad Levinson states:

"The researchers came with an answer: nine. Your message must penetrate a person's mind nine times before that person is ready to make a purchase from you. And that's the good news. The bad news is that for every three times you put out the word-via signs, letters, e-mail, whatever- people aren't paying attention two of those times. If you put the word three times, you've penetrated a mind once. What happens then?

You promote your business six times. Then you've penetrated minds two times. What happens then? People realize that they've heard of you. Put out the word nine times, and they realize they've seen your marketing somewhere. They figure you must be a successful company because unsuccessful companies don't market. Put out the word twelve times, and they begin to think that one of these days they'll look into your offering. Put it out fifteen times, and you've penetrated their minds five times. This is when they'll read every word you say, send for your brochure, and visit your website. The momentum is well under way. But at this point most people figure their campaign isn't working, so they abandon it and begin again. Bad idea.

Not until you've put forth your message twenty-seven times have you penetrated your prospects' minds nine times. And that's when they'll order what you're selling, treating you like a friend because of the familiarity you've built up. To go through such a long ordeal is just too much for most business owners. The only ones who survive to the end are those blessed with patience. They know that marketing does not work instantly and takes time."

So many companies in the wedding industry also have opportunities for business not related to weddings. As we mention at our Exhibiting 101 seminars, there are birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, parties, births, and other events where your product or service might be needed. This is a great chance at getting more leads. Suppose you are able to book an anniversary event with the mother of a bride. She in turn lets her friends know about you. When the bride gets married, she tells her friends, and then has her anniversaries, and there could be potential business again. That's just talking about anniversaries.

In essence, one bride lead can generate so many other referrals that can produce other leads and revenue for you.

The key is to continue staying in touch until someone tells you to go away. We have all had those who said, "take us out of your system." But, we have so many more that appreciate us staying in touch.

In today's system, we do have to pay attention to the avenues that can appear as spam. You may have to work with those that "opt in" for that specific source.

There are ways to stay in touch on a continual basis without the bride feeling like you are a pest or a nuisance. Newsletters and "Specials" announcements are a great way to do this.

The following information came from one attendee from the July 2008 Dallas Bridal Show. This person said that they were more impressed with the person that contacted them first and that has stayed in contact continually.

According to this source, one company from the July Dallas Bridal Show sends out a newsletter twice each month with great information. By doing this, the brides do not feel pressured, but notice and remember this company because information is being received continuously. There were a few companies that made contact a couple of times and then quit. That will not produce the best results or even come close.

The show took place over three months ago and some companies are not going to do great business from that show unless they understanding the need to "work the leads." I know a few have told me personally over the years, that no matter what, they only contact someone so many times and that's it. That is your decision. If what you do produces the business and revenue that you are comfortable with, then I understand.

However, for the majority of companies, there is a real need to produce more business each year. It may take being even more consistent than ever before, especially in this tough economy.

The real survivors never give up. I know how easy it is to get discouraged. I can recall one day many years ago when I was calling on our bridal shows and home shows when I was told "no" 19 times! Rather than throw in the towel, I allowed the experience to motivate me to continue because I knew it meant I was getting closer to a "yes." It ended up being a very productive day.

Brides are busy just like you are. What you do may not be a priority on their mind today, but on that specific day when what you do comes to the top of the list, the bride may look at the current information that she has. It just may be that your competitor has been staying in touch.

Generate Leads - Work those Leads!-Produce More Results!

    or

Generate Leads-Contact a few times and quit- Produce Less Results.

    Which is your desire?

(Great media relationships for over 20 years through more than 250 shows produced.)
    5. Our website www.bridalshowsinc.com has proven to be very beneficial to those companies that have advertised on the website. Because we drive traffic to the website through everything listed in #4 above, it has great value. Anyone currently exhibiting in our shows has their main category listed free.
    6. Become a student of your profession.
    7. Categories are limited so that every company has the fair opportunity to do business. Most companies appreciate our "fairness" policies. That's why we have more companies exhibiting with us than any other bridal show producer in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. If a show is over saturated with categories of the wedding compared to the number of brides who attend that show, it is difficult for every company to do well.
    8. Insurance Requirement. Brides can trust our exhibiting companies more because they are insured. Most companies in our shows have a yearly general liability policy, while the others carry the show event insurance. Who would you prefer to do business with if you were the bride? Someone who is insured, or not insured?
    9. Participating in shows proves that you are a smart marketer. You are using the best marketing tool to promote your business. You are doing business with the leader in the industry who is always striving to increase the professionalism of this industry.
    10. Face-to-face contact with a specific market. This is so important so that the bride can tell if you are someone they want to do business with. Trust and rapport are built immediately.
    11. Very competent and confident staff working with Bridal Shows, Inc.
    12. Show and Tell. You and your product or service can be fully understood now. This is a time to let your personality and professionalism shine through.
    13. Taste and See. Your food item(s) can be trusted so the bride feels good about the food choices she makes.
    14. Trends. This is the best opportunity to ask lots of brides and their friends about new and upcoming trends. New ideas will come from this immediately.
    15. Customize to the bride. It is difficult in any other advertising medium to let the bride know everything you can do for the wedding. Imagine how many times you can ask, "What can we do special for you?" This is an excellent time to let the bride know you can customize anything that you do.
    16. Demonstrating a Product. Again, it is very difficult for others to really comprehend a demonstration unless they are right in front of you.
    17. Educate. This can take some time for each person. It is more complete when they are able to see you, talk to you, see what you do, and ask questions. And, of course, you ask questions, also.
    18. Building Relationships/Networking. Many lasting relationships have been built from meeting others at our shows.
    19. Free gifts-excellent way to give out customized specialty promotional items other than business cards and literature.
    20. Competition. Because there will be a lot of companies exhibiting, you can view what your competition is doing.
    21. Frequency. Six shows a year. It is extremely important in keeping your company name out there in every way you can possibly afford. When you work your leads properly over time, you will generate profits. Our shows give you the opportunity to also meet with wedding publications, websites, wedding association members, and sometimes our media partners to find other avenues to add to your advertising mix.
    22. Learn. Learn what to do or what not to do. If you see someone standing and smiling and getting every lead they can, then learn from them for what to do. If you see someone sitting behind a table and folding their arms, then learn what not to do. Be personable and friendly and truly care about helping the bride- the bride will learn quickly to do business with you.
    23. Be consistent-Participating in 2 to 6 of our shows a year helps you to consistently have enough leads to work to thrive in your business.

Why would you wait? Call us today to reserve your space.

If your category is on a waiting list, do not let that deter you. Appreciate the fact that once you are able to exhibit that you will have a fair opportunity.
